Internet service provider (ISP) stands behind the Internet connection. ISP might be a company or vendor that provides Internet access to businesses or home users. As we mentioned, ISP is a vendor that ensures users access to the Internet. Many people might not know that Internet connecting requires certain telecommunications, networking, and routing equipment. ISPs enable users to receive access to networks that incorporate special equipment. This process is the central pledge for establishing Internet connectivity.

How do ISPs work?

Generally, three main types of ISPs work to provide access to the Internet. The highest level is for Tier 1 Internet service providers. These providers have access to all the networks, and it is based on network peering agreements. They link the worldwide global Internet network. Tier 1 ISPs tend to sell their networks to Tier 2 ISPs that later sell access to the Internet to businesses and users. 

Apart from that, the third level in the Internet access pyramid is intended for Tier 3 ISPs. They mostly appear as local providers who might buy network bandwidth in Tier 2 ISPs and then sell it to organizations and end-users.

Traffic needs to pass through several hops to reach the final destination when it travels from your home network to the Internet itself. In other words, traffic might need to go through your home modem, then through the Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 ISPs, and come back via another number of providers before achieving its final point.

Types of ISPs

Modern ISPs differ from another by several features. For instance, there are fiber ISPs that ensure the fastest Internet access via using fiber optic cables. Another type of ISPS goes to the DSL or digital subscriber line. This internet connection requires a modem and a separate line. 

The out-of-date kind of ISPs is dial-up. These providers were popular at the time when the Internet was made. Dial-up providers provide Internet connections through phone lines. The last type is a broadband ISP. Such Internet service providers offer high-speed Internet via phone lines or cables.
